Vocal recording

Our treated vocal booth lets you hear yourself clearly while a recording engineer listens with you take by take — without rushing the performance.

Vocalist in treated booth with microphone, engineer visible through glass.

At Monoxyleorix in Amsterdam, vocal sessions are about focus and detail. The booth is roughly 6 square metres, the control room 14 m², and glass between the spaces keeps eye contact with the engineer. We do not hit record the moment you walk in: microphone, headphone mix and levels are tuned to your voice first.

Bring a finished instrumental, a project from your home setup, or lyrics and a melody only. We work with solo artists, rappers, spoken-word performers and bands adding leads after a live session. Want balance and polish next? Book mixing or mastering separately with clear pricing.

Process

  1. Send material

Share backing tracks, lyrics and references beforehand. Read our preparation guide so the session is ready when you arrive.

  2. Mic and mix

A short comparison of two setups, pop filter and distance set, plus a headphone mix you can perform in comfortably.

  3. Capture takes

Full passes first, then targeted redos. We flag strong takes as we go so your energy stays on performance, not endless rewinds.

  4. Wrap up

Comping chosen sections, light breath edits where needed, WAV export on session day. Archiving follows our terms (24 months).

Booth and control room

The vocal booth is compact but purposefully treated: dry enough for control, not so dead that your voice feels muffled. In the 14 m² control room the engineer listens on nearfields; we keep 2 pairs available for A/B checks. The window between booth and desk keeps communication visual — handy between takes.

Monoxyleorix B.V. has operated from Grote Bickersstraat 74 in Amsterdam since 2019. Getting here: Tram 13 (Westerdok stop) and bus 22 (Haarlemmer Houttuinen stop) are within walking distance. From Amsterdam Centraal station it is about a twelve-minute walk via Haarlemmer Houttuinen and Grote Bickersstraat. No private parking; paid street parking or Q-Park Centrale Markt. Hours: Tuesday to Friday 10:00–19:00, Saturday 10:00–17:00. Closed Monday and Sunday; evening sessions on request. Evening slots outside standard hours are on request — mention that on your enquiry.

Microphone choice and placement

No single microphone suits every singer. Daan Meijer (recording engineer, live and vocal) usually starts with a quick comparison on one verse: condenser for detail, dynamic when you work close or rap hard, another capsule if you want softer highs. You listen in the control room; we decide together.

Distance, height and pop-filter angle shape mid-range weight and sibilance. Small tweaks there save time in mixing later. With 12 preamp channels in the rack we keep headroom for soft lines and loud choruses without clipping.

Who books vocal time

Singer-songwriters pitching a demo, rappers finishing an EP track, producers with a beat who need a guest vocal, bands stacking harmonies after band recording: the booth covers those cases. Artistic spoken word fits too when it stays within an engineer-led session.

Minimum age for booking on your own is 16; younger participants need written consent from a parent or guardian and an adult present. We do not host large crowds in the booth — focus beats company.

What to bring

Deliver instrumentals as WAV (without guide vocals if possible), note tempo and key, and send lyrics — printed sheet or mobile display both work. Two reference tracks whose vocal production you like help us match intent. Bring personal headphones only when you already perform in them daily; otherwise ours are tuned for the room.

Skip heavy dairy or ice-cold drinks right before the session if your voice is sensitive; the prep guide lists more practical tips. Forgot a file? Email [email protected] — if we receive it 1 business day before the slot, we usually recover.

During the session

You set the pace: breaks are encouraged. A tired voice rarely yields usable takes. Want feedback on pitch, timing or articulation? Say so — some artists want only technical confirmation, others an honest outside ear.

For stacks and doubles we use clear track names: lead, dub, ad-libs, harmonies. That way you or an external mixer can continue without guesswork. Pitch correction or heavy tuning is not default; ask if something fits inside booked time — heavier work belongs in mixing.

Delivery and formats

We record 24-bit / 48 kHz unless your project needs another sample rate — tell us in advance. You receive separate vocal WAVs aligned from the start of the song, plus an optional rough bounce for home checks. Transfer via download link or your drive; we note briefly which takes were comped.

Session files stay on our archive for 24 months, then deletion follows privacy policy and terms. Back up locally. Mix and master after tracking are not included in studio hourly rates; see all services for prices incl. 21% VAT.

Not included

Full mixing of your song, mastering, hiring musicians, paid songwriting or extended production beyond tracking sit outside Vocal recording. Travel, parking and catering are yours to arrange. If the instrumental is not ready, prepare at home — studio hours cost more than tweaking in your DAW.

Mix and master revisions include 2 rounds when booked separately; within the recording slot we redo takes while booked time allows, not as open-ended revision afterward without a new booking.

FAQ

How long to record one single?

For a three- to four-minute track with verses, chorus and a few doubles, plan roughly two to four hours. The half-day block suits many solo artists.

Can someone come with me?

One or two trusted people in the control room are fine. Larger groups distract quickly — discuss via contact if you expect more visitors.

Do you mix the track too?

Yes, as separate mixing at €185 per song incl. VAT with 2 revision rounds. You may mix vocals elsewhere — we deliver clearly named tracks.

What if I am ill on the day?

Tell us as early as possible. More than 7 days ahead we move the date free of charge; closer in, deposit rules in terms apply. With a rough voice, postponing beats forcing takes.

Can I record in the evening?

Tuesday to Friday 10:00–19:00, Saturday 10:00–17:00. Closed Monday and Sunday; evening sessions on request. Evening slots outside those hours are on request and subject to availability — note your preference on contact.
